BUCYRUS—A Mansfield man who was recently appointed a new attorney appeared in Crawford County Common Pleas Court on Thursday to plead guilty.
Marquis Allred, 34, of Mansfield, pleaded guilty to one count of having weapons under disability, a third-degree felony that is punishable with up to 36 months in prison, one count of improper handling of a firearm in a car, a fourth-degree felony punishable with up to 18 months in prison, and two counts of possession of drugs, both fifth-degree felonies that are punishable by up to 12 months in prison.
Bucyrus attorney Tom Nicholson represented Allred in the plea agreement that Crawford County Common Pleas Court Judge Sean Leuthold approved. As a result, Allred will serve 36 months in prison on the having weapons under disability charge, eight months on the improper handling of a firearm in an automobile, eight months on one count of possession of drugs and seven months on the second count of possession of drugs.
In total, Allred was sentenced to 59 months in prison and judicial release may be granted at a later time.
Nicholson told the court that the case was distressing and that he hoped with the help of the probation department Allred could turn his life around in the future.
Allred also apologized to the court.
“I’m sorry. I’ll do better when I get out,” Allred said.
Allred will receive credit for jail time served and must forfeit all drug-related property to the Galion Police Department.
Curtis Newcome, 26, Crestline, appeared in Crawford County Common Pleas Court to change his plea. Curtis pleaded guilty to two counts of trafficking in drugs, both fifth-degree felonies, and one count of possession of drugs, also a fifth-degree felony.
In an agreed plea sentence, Leuthold sentenced Newcome to 10 months in prison on each count for a total of 30 months in prison.
Newcome’s attorney is also Nicholson who told the court that Newcome’s family had retained him, taking the burden for his defense off of the state and that Newcome should have known better than to commit this crime.
Leuthold also ordered Newcome to forfeit all drug-related property to the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department. He will receive credit for jail time served.
