ZOAR, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—A tragic incident occurred Tuesday afternoon when a man and a woman were struck and killed by a Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway train while walking along a trestle bridge over Ohio Route 212.
The collision took place around 4:30 p.m. between the village of Zoar and Tuscarawas Valley High School.
The victims, who were walking northbound on the narrow, elevated bridge, were hit by the train despite its attempt to stop. The woman, who was 20 years old, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the identity of the man has not yet been confirmed.
The Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an investigation into the incident, collaborating with the coroner’s office, the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio, the National Transportation Safety Board, and the railroad company, all of which are cooperating fully with the investigation.
