A day to celebrate turned into one of mourning Sunday when a one-vehicle accident in Wyandot County claimed two lives, including that of a new groom.
Having just said their vows a few hours earlier, newlyweds Andrew Bloomfield and Ruth Driskill-Bloomfield were passengers in a pickup truck driven by Timothy Tebbe of Nevada. The Bloomfields were from Galion and a third passenger, Elizabeth Shelton, was from Bucyrus.
The accident occurred on Township Highway 135 just north of Township Highway 72. The Wyandot County Sheriff’s Office reports that the vehicle went out of control while traveling north on Township Highway 135. The vehicle traveled off the left side of the road, struck an embankment and caused the truck to start into a roll. The truck struck a utility pole and rolled several times before coming to rest in a corn field.
Shelton and Bloomfield were ejected from the vehicle. Driskill-Bloomfield and Tebbe were trapped in the vehicle and were extricated after first responders used the Jaws of Life.
Shelton, who was 26, was declared deceased at the scene. Bloomfield. age 27, died at St. Rita’s Hospital in Lima after being flown there by medical helicopter. Driskill-Bloomfield, who is 37, and Tebbe were also flown to St. Rita’s and remain in critical condition.
The crash remains under investigation by the Wyandot County Sheriff’s Office. Wyandot East EMS, Fire and Rescue, and Upper Sandusky EMS units also assisted at the scene.
