COLUMBUS — The administration of the Ohio High School Athletic Association announced Thursday the postponement of all OHSAA tournaments, indefinitely.

In a press conference Thursday afternoon, OHSAA Executive Director Jerry Snodgrass announced postponement of the OHSAA boys basketball regional, girls basketball state, ice hockey state and wrestling state tournaments.

No timetable has been determined for possible rescheduling for the tournaments.

Snodgrass said the science showing the COVID-19 Coronavirus spreads most among large groups and events is a large part leading to the decision. He said the superintendent of schools and governor’s office also were conferred with in the decision.

“We will use this time to work with the appropriate state authorities and health experts to determine our next steps moving forward,” Snodgrass said. “We realize this is disappointing for our participants and their fans, but the overall health and safety of everyone involved in our tournaments is our priority.”

The announcement was made after state and local officials recommended that no public gatherings take place to help stop the spread of the virus.

The OHSAA will release further updates regarding ticket refunds.

He said it was an emotional decision as athletes, such as girls basketball players who were warming up in St. John Arena at Ohio State University, had to cease activities immediately.

The safety of the athletes and spectators was listed as the main concern while the decision was made.

The announcement also comes when professional sports leagues such as the National Basketball Association, National Hockey League and Major League Soccer, as well as international soccer play has been postponed. Many NCAA basketball conference tournaments also have been cancelled.
