BUCYRUS–Wynford Elementary School, in conjunction with Tonya’s Hair Fashions, held a Spring Haircut Day.
Forty students received complimentary haircuts from Tonya and her stylist crew. It was a positive and uplifting experience for students whose parents consented to have their child’s hair cut & styled. Each student got around 15 minutes of special treatment.
Upon arrival at 121 W. Warren Street, the students exited the bus, and all four stylists (Tonya Lohr, Britney Hill, Danielle Starr, and Kendra Koge) were standing at their chairs, smiling and welcoming the kids.
Stylists asked each child if they wanted a trim or a cut. As hair was flying, students chatted about their favorite team, how old they are, or who usually cuts their hair.
A third-grader said, “I am so glad I am going to get this mop off my head.” His smile sure competed with the sun!
One boy asked if he could get a green mohawk. The reply was, “Hop in the chair, and we will see what the stylist can do.”
Another child said she wanted a short haircut. The stylist did cut her waist-long hair to shoulder length.
About halfway through, the girl said, “I bet my mom will be surprised!” With laughs and giggles all around, the stylist replied, “Yeah, I hope she likes it!”
All the students were able to see themselves in the giant mirror with their new cuts. They were beaming with pride, satisfaction, and gratefulness.
Students created notes of thanks and hung them on the stylists’ stations.
These kids got a lot more than a haircut from their visit to Tonya’s. They each received 15 minutes of individual time with a listening, caring stylist, a cut or trim, and super self-confidence! These students saw that THEY MATTER!
The students rode the bus back to WES with smiles and were greeted at the doors with more positive attention throughout the day.
Over 75 students signed up for a haircut, almost double the number planned for. With only 40 spots, about half got to make the trip.
Not only did the students gain something that day, but so did the adults involved to make it happen. Altruistic people put others above themselves, as these stylists did, volunteering their time, talent, and smiles.
While most kids enjoy being in the spotlight, it’s usually due to making a spot on the honor or merit roll, perfect attendance, or some other activities. Something as simple as a haircut was a spotlight moment in the lives of the students who participated.
