GALION – Three Galion High School students were recently selected to participate in the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) District 2 Honors Band for the 2016-2017 school year. Ceyanna Mohr (clarinet), Tyler Harris (trumpet) and Madison Lawson (euphonium) were selected by OMEA District 2 directors to participate in the prestigious musical group.
Students were provided with audition music at the end of October and decided individually whether to pursue a place in this honors ensemble. Auditions were prepared and recorded without the aid of a metronome.
“The process for auditioning for the OMEA District 2 Honors Band is quite challenging and time consuming,” said Jessica Hammond, Director of Bands. “While only three students were selected, we had a total of eight Symphonic Band members record the audition material, and they all did a fantastic job preparing their individual auditions.”
Elli Chandler, Makenna Mohr, Alexis Link, Allison Bauer and Douglas Harvey, along with Mohr, Harris and Lawson, committed themselves to extra work and additional after school time to prepare their recordings.
“I want to commend the eight Symphonic Band members for making the personal commitment and sacrifice to this very difficult audition process,” said Jim Grubbs, Galion Superintendent. “Mrs. Hammond does a tremendous job working with all our students that participate in our bands, and I’m excited for the opportunity that Ceyanna, Tyler and Madison have achieved.”
The trio will be participating in a two-hour rehearsal at Port Clinton High School on Monday, January 9, and then an all-day rehearsal and evening performance on Saturday, January 14. The 2017 OMEA District 2 honors band is under the direction of guest conductor Mr. Jon Waters, Heidelberg University.
