BUCYRUS, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—Are things getting a little stale with the flowers and candy? Are those February 14 dinner reservations getting harder to book? Are romantic comedies not as good as they were back in the good old 20th century?
You might want to stop by MB Subculture in Bucyrus and take a fond, longing gaze at some Valentine’s Day gift ideas that are a little outside the heart-shaped box.

Besty Gearhart, owner of the local comics and costume shop explained, “People always go for the familiar comic romances like Superman and Lois Lane, Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson, Batman and Catwoman, Scarlet Witch and The Vision.”
But Gearhart’s biggest seller is, believe it or not, Archie. “Every year,” Gearhart said, “we always get the Valentine’s special issue.”

The old romance comics also do well, Gearhart said of titles like Sweethearts and Teenage Love. Imagine a candlelit evening, cuddled up with your Valentine, reading a tale of passion from Soap Opera Romances.
And if comics aren’t your thing, you might peruse MB Subculture for some Halloween-romantic artwork by local fans. One particular painting features a smiling Jack Skellington with his Corpse Bride against a giant red heart.
“Toxic Avenger is a love story,” Gearhart explained, showing off a new copy of “Toxie #1” (Comic Book Club), a comic released to coincide with the movie reboot starring Peter Dinklage (Cinemablend). Despite being hideously deformed, Toxie has had two girlfriends, Sarah and Claire—both blind (Comic Vine).
“It’s crazy what people love,” said Gearhart.

If you’re still not feeling the comic-love vibe, remember, MB Subculture specializes in costumes as well. So, there’s always the possibility of a romantic dinner as your favorite fantasy sweethearts.
