BUCYRUS, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—A local nonprofit is working to ensure that every child in the region has a comfortable place to lay their head. The Crawford-Wyandot chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP), which launched last fall, has already built and delivered 34 beds to children who previously lacked them.

Chapter President Ed Pfeifer and Bed Application Coordinator Jenny Lynn Pfeifer shared the organization’s progress during a recent community update. The group serves children ages 3 to 17, providing a complete sleeping solution that includes a hand-built wooden frame, a new mattress, and fresh bedding.

“The need is real and the need is urgent,” Jenny Lynn Pfeifer said. “We’ve seen many things, and there’s no doubt our community has this issue.”

The chapter currently services the zip codes for Nevada (44849), Bucyrus (44820), and Upper Sandusky (43351). Families within these areas can apply for a bed through the national organization’s website. Each delivery is a full-service event; volunteers not only transport the beds but also assemble them and “make the bed” so it is ready for immediate use.

The beds are constructed during “Build Days,” where raw lumber is transformed into finished frames through an assembly line process. Ed Pfeifer noted that the chapter is always looking for volunteers to assist with both construction and deliveries, as well as donations of “bed-in-a-bag” sets and pillows.

“It’s a special part of the process,” Jenny Lynn Pfeifer added. “When I tell people these beds are made by people in your community, they’re usually very touched.”
