BUCYRUS—Not even the rain could dampen the spirit behind this year’s toy drive hosted by the Bucyrus Fire Department.
“We started this because we like to do small things to help the community with this and Spooktacular. We didn’t really have anything that we did this time of year, so we started doing it,” Captain Casey Gillen said. “The first year we made about one thousand dollars and filled up one, eight-foot table with toys.”
Now in its eleventh year, the toy drive was as strong as ever with over 1,600 dollars in donations and multiple eight-foot tables stacked high with toys to be donated.
“It’s going very well. The tables are filling up, and they have already taken toys out of here today to make room for more donations,” Gillen said.
With the current pandemic, the fire department felt it was especially important to host the toy drive year because there are so many people out of work.
“We just want to thank the community for their Christmas spirit and for giving back,” Gillen said.
