BUCYRUS – The “bombing” of Bucyrus with bulbs is about to begin, and workers are needed on the front lines.
The fall project to plant 10,000 daffodil bulbs around the city in conjunction with the upcoming Bicentennial Celebration will officially kick off Sat., Nov. 7, at 10 a.m. at Schines Art Park downtown. The Earth, Wind and Flowers Garden Club is spearheading the community project.
“This is to be a fun event designed with enough freedom to bring pleasure to all the ‘bombers,’” said Mary Lee Minor, garden club president and publicity chairman. “Bring family and friends and come. We will have directions and a strip to help you dig the holes deep enough.”
The garden club has ordered 10,000 yellow trumpet daffodil bulbs called “Mando,” which will be planted that day at city parks and in front of City Hall, the Bucyrus Public Library and the Crawford County Courthouse. Volunteers are being asked to show up with a shovel and a pair of garden gloves, she said.
The popular bulbs will already be counted and bagged for workers, ready to be taken to other locations around town, such as the Bucyrus Historical Society, the Toledo & Central Ohio Train Station, Lions Park, the Crawford County Fairgrounds and other spots, she said.
Until then, Garden Club members are also soliciting volunteers to help them bury bulbs along the main thoroughfares into town, she said. Residents wishing to help with that phase are asked to call 419-569-6123 (Rt. 330 from the west), 419-569-0623 (Rts. 4 and 98 from the south), and 419-561-0023 (Rt. 4 and Tiffin St. from the north).
To assist with digging along Rt. 330 and Hopley Ave., residents can call 419-561-1754. For the big planting at Aumiller Park, interested volunteers can call either 419-569-3202 or 614-446-3207.
Besides the city’s Bicentennial, which kicks off Dec. 31, the daffodil project is also recognizing the 35th anniversary of Earth, Wind and Flowers, which is anticipating “an explosion of color in the spring” when the popular perennials finally bloom.
