NEVADA, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—A 70-year-old Wyandot County man is dead, and his relative is behind bars following a domestic disturbance that turned fatal on Sunday evening.

According to Wyandot County Sheriff Todd D. Frey, the Sheriff’s Office received an initial 911 call at approximately 7:31 p.m. on December 14 from the residence of Stephen Mitten, located at 2858 Township Highway 43.

Deputies, supported by the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Upper Sandusky Police Department, rushed to the scene. 

While units were en route at 7:38 p.m., a second emergency call was placed from the home reporting that threats were being made against a family member.

Upon arrival, law enforcement officers quickly secured a male subject and began a sweep of the property. 

During the search, deputies discovered Stephen G. Mitten, 70, deceased inside the home from apparent gunshot wounds.

The Wyandot County Major Crimes Unit (MCU) and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) were called in to process the scene. 

Assistant County Coroner Michael O’Reilly ordered an autopsy, and the victim’s body was transported to the Lucas County Coroner’s Office for examination.

Jason G. Mitten, 48, of Sycamore, was taken into custody and is currently incarcerated at the Wyandot County Jail. 

He faces one count of murder.

The investigation remains active and is being conducted by the Major Crimes Unit in collaboration with: the Wyandot County Sheriff’s Office, the Wyandot County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI).
