The Bucyrus Board of Zoning Appeals met to discuss two subjects Tuesday afternoon and approved one.
The board discussed Suburban Lanes’ request for an area variance for the bowling alley’s side yard setback. Suburban Lanes wanted to construct a 16-feet, square pavilion in its fenced area in front of the bowling alley.
The purposed pavilion would be located three feet from the front property line along Washington Street. Because this property is within the Limited Industrial/Commercial Zoning District, it is required that a 25-feet setback for the north side yard be present. However, no setback is required for the front yard.
Therefore, Suburban Lanes requested an area variance for their side yard setback in order to construct the pavilion. Owner of Suburban Lanes, Butch Pangallo, was present at the board meeting. Pangallo explained to the board why he felt the pavilion would enhance business at Suburban Lanes.
“In the summertime any bowling alley in the world, they suffer… we make a random few hundred dollars every weekend on bowling in the summer, and it isn’t enough… I just want to have a nice place where people can enjoy themselves outside in the sun and maybe bring in a couple extra hundred dollars every weekend to offset what we are losing for people that bowl,” Pangallo explained.
After careful consideration, the board granted Suburban Lanes the variance needed to construct the pavilion.
Wise Funeral Service is considering installing a cremation facility within its current building on 129 W. Warren St. in order to improve their service abilities to families. The funeral home asked that a cremation facility be permitted to be used within the General Business District.
Before the board discussed this topic, it was brought up that a representative for Wise Funeral Service could not be present and had requested the matter be tabled until July 11. The Board made a motion that the subject be tabled until July 11 at 4 p.m. The motion was passed.
