BUCYRUS — A Bucyrus High School student had the chance to brings her concerns to the Bucyrus Board of Education during its meeting Wednesday.
Student representative to the board Kristen Vaughn, a senior at BHS, addressed the board about the current class schedule.
Vaughn then asked if it would be possible to look at the current bell schedule at the high school. She said the previous schedule allowed for clubs to meet and students to perform school work during the day, but the current one does not include that time.
She said many organizations now must meet as early as 7 a.m. before school. She added that students who are involved in multiple organizations do not get home until late and then have multiple hours of homework as well.
High School Principal Dr. Mark Burke said some teachers have raised similar concerns and he would be interested in discussing the issue further with Vaughn.
Her final item was inquiring if it would be possible for all students to receive entry into athletic event for free and not just athletes. She said the lack of attendance at events is concerning to other students and she and other members of the leadership academy want to improve school pride.
“The school would not be losing any money, because the students aren’t coming and paying anyway,” Vaughn said.
The board said it would be interested in further investigating the possibility of allowing secondary school students free entry and possibly allowing elementary students similar access with a paying adult.
Vaughn also told the board the student council and FFCLA led a food drive which raised more than 1,200 items for the Salvation Army. She said the original goal was 750 items.
The board thanked Vaughn for bringing the interests of the students to its attention.
