Press release

Forty-one musicians will gather at Good Hope Lutheran Church, 129 W. Charles St., Bucyrus on Sunday afternoon, Feb. 26 at 4:00 p.m. They will present “The Carnival of the Animals” by French composer, Camille Saint-Saëns. The free concert is part of this year’s curriculum of Bucyrus Suzuki Strings (Mary Ann Basinger, violinist) and Bucyrus Talent Education (Donna Kurtz, pianist). Eleven cities are represented.

In addition to students, special guests will be alumnae, and members of Mansfield and Ashland Symphonies. Jonny Price, of Bucyrus Little Theatre, will narrate with poetry of Ogden Nash and introductions of each “animal” by Leonard Bernstein. Mary Ann Basinger will conduct.

“The Carnival of the Animals” is a humorous suite of fourteen movements, a different animal being featured in each movement. This is the fourth time it has been featured in Bucyrus over four decades in a collaboration between BTE and BSS. The most recent was in 2008. It will be an hour-long concert geared to all ages, from preschoolers through senior citizens. (In fact, the performers will include kindergarten twin pianists through one almost eighty!) The first public performance of “Carnival” took place in Paris on this same weekend (Feb. 25, 1830) as the current Bucyrus presentation.
