BUCYRUS — Shawn McGinty and Preston Zornes opened the doors to their business, Small City Thrift, on the last First Friday of the season in September and the business is continuing to grow.

The couple started the business, located at 119 W. Mansfield St., in Bucyrus, because they felt Bucyrus needed a good high-quality thrift store.

“The town needed a thrift store with quality items at affordable prices,” Zornes said.

Zornes is a Bucyrus native and is the son of Lewis Zornes, who died in a kayak accident a few years ago and was the owner of the former Zornes Auction Factory on South Walnut Street.

“I helped my dad with his auction business so I have experience in this area,” Zornes said.

McGinty hails from the Tiffin area but said he has grown to love the Bucyrus community.

“We love Bucyrus and are very involved in the community,” Zornes said. “Since we opened, we have participated in the Santa Parade and Candlelight Christmas and look forward to participating in events throughout the community in the future.”

From living room furniture and kitchen tables to household goods, wall hangings and wedding dresses, the pair works diligently to purchase high-quality items at estate sales to provide their customers with affordable necessary items as well as vintage items.

“We accept furniture on consignment at our discretion, but at this point, that is all we do through consignment,” said McGinty. “We do take donations and recycle broken items such as TV’s, magazines and books that are not salable.”

Zornes said he and McGinty will pick up and deliver furniture for a fee.

“We work with a lot of elderly people who have furniture to sell but no way to haul it to our store. We will pick it up for them. We will also deliver larger items that people purchase if they need us to do so,” Zornes said.

Zornes said a fee is charged for pick-up and delivery, based on the distance from the store.

McGinty said they also work with local artists and crafters.

The store is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, closed on Tuesday and open from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
