BUCYRUS—New distracted driving laws took effect on Tuesday in Ohio. It is now easier for officers to pull motorists over for distracted driving. The new, upgraded law makes distracted driving – texting, checking, social media, and streaming videos, all a primary offense.

In addition to that new law, speeding offense penalties have been updated.

It is now a criminal offense for people to drive through town at more than 35 mph in a business district. It is a criminal offense to drive more than 50 mph in municipal corporation areas; or faster than 35 mph in a school zone during recess or while the children go to or leave school during school opening and closing hours.

The offense is now a fourth-degree misdemeanor punishable with a fine and up to 30 days in jail.
