The idea of completing more than one task with the same amount of effort is desirable in today’s high paced world. Cover crops are the ultimate multitasker of the agriculture world. Cover crops provide multiple benefits. People growing crops know how important it is to have good healthy soil, and it is becoming well known how cover crops deliver this in a big way. But they also reduce erosion, increase water absorption, and capture nutrients and break-up compaction. Why use steel and expensive fuel to break up compaction layers in your fields when the proper cover crop can do that? These are some of the reasons we are seeing more and more interest in cover crops throughout Crawford County.
With most farming practices to be successful we must adapt certain aspects of our management to accommodate new ideas and concepts. With proper planning, cover crops can be a success both to your farm operation and the environment. To find out more about cover crops and the benefits they provide, join us for an information meeting at the Crawford County Courthouse Lower Level Conference Room on March 12 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Topics include cover crop cost share, timely termination of cover crops, insurance and crop reporting, pros and cons of various seeding methods.
Register by March 11 to help us plan for the informational materials. For more information contact the Crawford SWCD/NRCS office at 419-562-8280.
