NEWS RELEASE:

Galion – Learning to give back to their community and help others has become a fixture in the educational environment for students in the Galion City School District. The Galion Intermediate School fifth grade teachers and students held its annual “Socktober” fundraiser for the fourth consecutive year, and it was another success.

The fifth-grade team, after reviewing the idea from YouTube sensation Kid President, decided to launch the “Socktober” fundraiser at the Intermediate School during the 2014-2015 school year. In the three-minute video, Kid President challenged Internet users to change the world.

“I presented the ‘Socktober’ idea to my fifth-grade teammates and we thought it would be a great way to get our students helping others in need,” said Paula Prince, Galion Intermediate fifth grade teacher. “Our four-year total, with this year’s collection, has exceeded 2,400 pairs of socks!”

The fifth-grade students and teachers expanded the fundraiser this year to include all the classes at the Galion Intermediate School. The winning class who collected the most socks this year received an ice cream social featuring ice cream from Toft’s Dairy in Sandusky.

“Ms. Moira Fodor’s third grade class collected the most socks this year,” said Prince. “The ice cream social is being provided by an anonymous donor to thank the students for their commitment to helping those less fortunate in Galion.”

“I can’t tell you enough how proud I am of our students and staff at the Intermediate School for taking the time to help those in need in our community,” said Jim Grubbs, Galion Superintendent. “Student-led community service projects enhance the overall education of students in the Galion City School District, and I’m proud of all our students and staff in the district for finding ways to help the Galion community in a variety of ways.”
