Fleeing from the police probably didn’t end quite the way one accused shoplifter had planned when he had to be rescued by them instead.

A twenty-five-year-old Virginia Beach man fled from the Bucyrus Kroger after shoplifting complaints were made Sunday and headed instead to the rising Sandusky River. After roughly 45 minutes in the river, the man was rescued by Lt. Chris Schaeffer from the Bucyrus Fire Department.

The Fire Department, along with the Ohio State Patrol and a few area residents, assisted the Bucyrus Police Department in the rescue. The man was pulled from the river just south of Aumiller Park and was taken to the Bucyrus Community Hospital by LifeStar.

The incident remains under investigation.
