The Crawford County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents that they could be victims of a mail scam.

The Sheriff’s Office was contacted Thursday morning concerning a scam that targets residents through letters from Liberty Financial Services from Los Angeles, CA. The letter includes a check from Aetna Life Insurance Company out of El Paso, TX. The letter states that the resident is the winner of $755,000 and the corresponding check is to help with the cost of the processing fees. The recipient is asked to call a phone number and to speak with a David Morgan. That person then verifies that the recipient won and he will request that the recipient deposits the check into his or her bank account. He asks that after the recipient deposits the check to call them back for further instructions.

The Sheriff’s Office reports that this has been confirmed as a scam.
