BUCYRUS — With the anticipated incoming snowstorm, Crawford County Sheriff Scott Kent wants to remind motorists of the emergency protocols taken by the county.
Motorists are encouraged to pay attention to the condition advisories implemented by the sheriff’s office.
According to Kent, the meanings of the levels are:
Level 1: Roadways are hazardous. Motorists are asked to drive with caution. No legal travel limitations.
Level 2: Roadways are hazardous with blowing and drifting snow and ice. Citizens are encouraged to contact employers to check if attendance at work is necessary.
Level 3: Extremely hazardous roadway conditions. Motorists are subject to arrest if found driving in a Level 3 advisory. Essential employees should carry documentation from their employers stating why they are needed at their place of business in the conditions.
Kent said a Level 3 advisory is directly implemented by the sheriff.
“I try to only call a Level 3 when absolutely necessary,” Kent said. “I understand that it impacts businesses and other factors.”
Kent said a Level 3 is called when roadways become impassable.
“Sometimes the plows just can’t keep up,” Kent said.
He said at times he has found vehicles trapped in the middle of roadways due to motorists driving in inclement weather.
If a Level 3 is activated, along with the other two levels, Kent said notifications will be sent to the other local law enforcement, fire departments, EMS, EMA and local media.
He said the public also may receive direct messages from the Crawford County WENS System.
During a Level 3, Kent said additional personnel will be on duty to assist with calls and traffic control.
He said in order to keep the lines open for real emergencies, the public is asked to not use the emergency lines at the sheriff’s office to inquire about the level status or road conditions.
“It ties up the lines and people with emergencies cannot get through,” Kent said. “We ask everyone to sign up for the alert system, or check with the local media sites for the most up-to-date information.”
