The Crawford County Sheriff’s Office has been made aware of a scam that is occurring Mahoning County area. This scam is done by telephone.

The caller identifies himself or herself as a deputy sheriff from a particular county and that there is a warrant for the call receiver’s arrest for failure to appear. The caller will attempt to pressure you into taking care of the warrant by posting bond over the phone. He or she will tell you that the warrant cannot be satisfied by appearing in court and that it has to be done over the phone.

Credit card information is taken from the unsuspecting individual and funds are deducted from the credit card.

Our office received a report of a similar attempted scam in 2013, but has not received any reports as of recent. The Sheriff’s Office would like to remind you to use extreme caution when asked to give bank account information, credit card numbers, passwords, or social security numbers, over the telephone. Never respond to unexpected requests for your personal information.
