SHELBY, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—A man was taken to OhioHealth, and firearms were seized following an incident that prompted a lockdown of Shelby City Schools and nearby businesses on Tuesday morning, according to a press release from Shelby Police Chief Lance Combs.

Authorities reported that firearms were discovered at the scene on Sunset Drive and have been secured as evidence. Importantly, no direct threats of violence were made toward officers or others during the incident.

As of the time of publication, the identity of the individual involved has not been released.

According to reports, the Shelby Police Department initially had routine contact with the resident of Sunset Drive on Tuesday morning.

Following their interaction, the individual called the department again, requesting that an officer return to his home when they were on duty.

However, the officer requested was not on duty at the time, and the individual asked for the officer to respond when available.

Shortly after, the Shelby Police Department received a follow-up call from a mental health provider, who indicated that the individual was in crisis and needed to go to the hospital. The provider also reported that the man had armed himself and was refusing to disarm.

In response, the Shelby Police and Fire Departments established a perimeter around the residence, positioning the Shelby City Schools Resource Officer to ensure safety between the property and the nearby schools. Consequently, a lockdown was initiated at Shelby City Schools.

Officers used a patrol loudspeaker to instruct the resident to come outside without his weapon.

The individual ultimately complied with these commands and was transported to OhioHealth for evaluation and treatment.
