SHELBY, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—A police officer was injured and a suspect was killed following a violent confrontation at an Arby’s restaurant late on December 7, 2024. The incident occurred around 11:18 PM at the establishment located at 234 Mansfield Ave.

According to reports, Sergeant Noah Kocher and Officer Dominic Ewing were attempting to serve a warrant for Tyler Jacobs, issued by Shelby Municipal Court. Upon making contact with Jacobs and informing him of the warrant, he allegedly attacked Sergeant Kocher, stabbing him in the neck with a knife.

In a swift response, Sergeant Kocher managed to create distance between himself and Jacobs, who pursued him with the weapon. In a critical moment, Sergeant Kocher drew his service weapon and fired at Jacobs, striking him.

Officer Ewing, stationed at the back door of the restaurant, quickly entered the establishment to assist Sergeant Kocher and provided critical aid to both him and Jacobs. Emergency services, including Shelby Fire, transported both individuals to the hospital. While Sergeant Kocher is reported to be in stable condition, Jacobs succumbed to his injuries.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) has been called in to investigate the officer-involved shooting and to process the scene of the incident.

The Shelby Police Department expressed gratitude to various local agencies, including the Shelby Fire Department, Richland County Sheriff’s Office, Ohio State Highway Patrol, Lexington Police Department, Mansfield Police Department, Ontario Police Department, and Plymouth Police Department for their quick response and support. They also thanked the staff at the Emergency Department of Ohio Health Mansfield for their professional care during the crisis.
