BUCYRUS — Celebrating the Bucyrus City Schools class of 2020 the a topic of discussion during the Bucyrus City Schools Board of Education meeting Thursday evening.

Bucyrus City Schools Superintendent Matt Chrispin informed the board that surveys were sent out to the seniors with options for how graduation may occur.

“We want to hear what the kids think,” Chrispin said. “It’s their graduation, and I know it’s important to the community and to parents, but we want to hear from the seniors.”

The seniors have 24 hours to complete the survey and turn it back in to have their vote count.

The options are to have it at the Bucyrus football stadium, where students will walk across the field individually with four family members; a drive-up option; a virtual option; pushing graduation back to June 26, in hopes that a traditional ceremony may occur; or the students were given a write-in option.

If things have not changed by June 8, the graduation ceremony will be virtual.

“I’m just glad to hear that we are taking a survey of the seniors’ opinions on graduation,” board member Deb Hoover said. “I’d be interested to hear what they have to say about graduation. It’s going to be different no matter what we do—it’s one of those life experiences that we don’t want, but sometimes life hands us a little lesson. I’m just glad they get an opportunity to speak out.”

Also during the meeting, the board was updated that the secondary school staff has been working on interviews to fill the assistant principal position vacated by Jay Dennison who has worked at BCS for more than 30 years. The board is hoping to have a recommendation at the May meeting.
