NEW WASHINGTON — Buckeye Central Local Schools will begin ALICE training in the coming days to better prepare teachers and students to react in the event of an active shooter at the school.

ALICE stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate and was launched in response to events like Columbine and Sandy Hook.

In ALICE training, individuals in the school are supposed to make sure the room that they are in is secure by locking and blocking the door, and if the shooter gets in the room, they are to do what they can to throw off the shooter’s focus by throwing things in their line of sight, making excessive noise, etc.

In other board business, on April 9, 10, 24 and 25, students who do not have to participate in the Ohio Department of Education’s AIR testing will have a late start to the school day.

The board’s next meeting is April 11 at 7 p.m.
