It is said the devil is in the details and Galion City Council began the process Tuesday of dealing with prickly details of summer pool passes.
Same-sex couple Melody Mohn and Hela Young discovered the wording of a city ordinance governing family pool passes prevented them from purchasing such a pass for themselves and their four children to swim at the Heise Park pool. Galion’s ordinance specifically defines “family” for the purpose of a pool pass as mother, father and children.
Council members discussed various rewording scenarios for the ordinance and in the end voted to send the issue back to the City Council Parks and Recreation Committee for a specific solution.
The idea of changing the ordinance did not go without debate as resident Bob Cerar voiced an objection to a change in the ordinance, seeing it as forcing a new definition of family upon the community.
