BUCYRUS — Safety Town is underway this week at the Bucyrus Elementary School for children preparing to enter kindergarten in the fall.

The week-long event is sponsored by the Bucyrus Police Department and teaches kids things like pedestrian safety, bike safety, community helpers, fire safety, bus safety, gun safety and stranger danger.

Shannon Trosper enrolled her six-year-old daughter, Janea, in Safety Town so she will be prepared as she begins to become more independent.

“They learn so much at Safety Town like stranger danger and what each of the street signs mean. I think it is important for her to learn this before she enters kindergarten in the fall,” said Trosper.

Bucyrus Police Chief Dave Koepke said Safety Town is designed to introduce children to a variety of safety issues.

“Whether they are on a school bus or walking to school, we want them to be aware of their surroundings and have an idea of safety in general,” Koepke said.

Four-year-old Dariana Perry said she learned about gun safety and street signs on her first day at Safety Town.

“If we see a gun we stop, don’t touch, run away and tell a grownup,” said Perry.

Twelve-year-old Alory Meade is helping at Safety Town with her mom, Nakisha.

“It’s fun to help kids learn about safety,” said Meade.

Koepke said this is the first year that Safety Town has a permanent home.

“Well, we use the basketball court to set up our streets, sidewalks and buildings but this is the location for Safety Town for years to come,” Koepke said.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the Bucyrus Chamber of Commerce and the public is welcome to attend.
