There were beautiful horses, there were stubborn horses, there were horses that broke before the races began.  And then there was Rockin Roger; a three-year-old Gelding running in the eighth race sponsored by Munz-Pirnstill Funeral Home.

Rockin Roger was cool and consistent with a very strong stride.  He took the lead early in the one-mile race with his rider Hunter Myers.

Harness racing has been a staple at the Crawford County Fair for more years than one could remember.  There are many superstitions among owners, trainers, and wage placers regarding the races.  For instance, it was my desire to do an in-depth story on a particular horse racing her first race Monday night.  Her owner, Dave Pirnstill of Bucyrus declined the interview explaining that it is bad luck to do interviews before races. He must have been right, although he didn’t do the interview, the horse got the purse.

Other superstitions include, never eating shelled peanuts at the track, even though they were selling peanuts in the stand.  Others include: Never bet on a gray horse, four stockings (white feet) are said to be unlucky, if there is a bid teller whose name is as same as the horse your betting on, by your ticket from him/her.  Post position eight is considered the luckiest and trainers don’t like red blankets on their horses.
