MANSFIELD – The Richland County Fair is about to kick off another seven-day run, offering food, fun, and something for everyone.
The longstanding tradition, now in its 168th year, is set for Aug. 7-13 at the fairgrounds, 750 N. Home Road. But this year’s edition, rich in agricultural roots, is also getting back to “family fun.”
“We doubled the budget for the kids’ zone this year. We’re just kind of trying to get people to come, families to come out,” said Christy Keith, vice president of the fair board. “We want to get families and kids in and then give them something to do.”
Keith said a committee pitched the idea to the fair board, and they agreed. The children’s activities – dubbed “grounds acts” – include a petting zoo, camel rides, pig races, glass blowing demonstrations, and an interactive fire prevention program.
Kids Day at the fair is Aug. 10, with discounted ride passes from noon to 4 p.m. Mr. Puppet, a favorite with kids, is returning to this year’s fair, Keith said, plus Rufus the Dufus, a stilt-walker, and magician, will be on hand to entertain the younger crowd.
Of course, grandstand entertainment is always a big attraction for fairgoers of all ages, Keith said. Harness racing, the demolition derby, motocross, a rodeo, music, and the OSTPA-sanctioned truck and tractor pull top the evening grandstand shows.
A Ferris wheel and other rides by Bates Amusement will line the midway, along with funnel cakes and plenty of tempting fair food. Livestock shows and sales, the heart of the fair’s mission, are a big draw, too, Keith said, especially for 4-H members.
Another fair favorite – the Ladies Pie Auction – will also be back, fetching big bucks for the homemade desserts. “It’s really a big attraction. A lot of people come in to purchase pies, so we’re excited to have that back in full force this year,” Keith said.
Dozens of fair board members, 4-H advisors, and other volunteers have pitched in to prepare for this year’s event, Keith said. “A lot of volunteers have put in time to get the grounds ready, so we’re excited.
We’re very excited.”
Rides open at noon each day, and the fair will conclude with fireworks at dusk on Aug. 13. General admission is $6, but children under 48-inches tall are free. For a full schedule of events, visit richlandcountyfair.com.
