A man who spent 50 years of his life battling fires in New Washington has passed away at the age of 75.

Richard “Dick” Ackerman passed away at his home on Monday after a lengthy illness. Ackerman graduated from New Washington High School in 1959.

Ackerman, who was a member of the New Washington Volunteer Fire Department for 50 years, stepped down as Fire Chief on September 30 due to health reasons.

Ackerman is survived by his wife Lorna, their seven children, three grandchildren, four sisters, and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church in New Washington on Thursday, March 23 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Memorial services will be held on March 24 at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in New Washington.
