MANSFIELD, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—The Renaissance Theatre will hold auditions for its MY Theatre production of Roald Dahl’s “Matilda the Musical, Jr.” on Monday, July 21, and Tuesday, July 22, both at 5 p.m.
Auditions will take place at the Renaissance’s Theatre 166 venue, located at 166 Park Avenue West in downtown Mansfield. Appointments are not required.
The theater is seeking performers aged 8 to 18, or those still attending high school during the 2025-2026 school year. Those auditioning should prepare a 16-to-32-measure excerpt from a song of their choice and bring sheet music in the proper key. An accompanist will be provided. Some actors may also be asked to read a short scene from the script.
Auditioners should bring a list of any schedule conflicts between the audition dates and the performance dates, which are September 12-14, 2025. All performances will be held on stage at the Renaissance.
“Matilda, Jr.” will be directed by Dauphne Maloney, with musical direction by Brian K. Nabors.
Inspired by Roald Dahl’s classic story, “Matilda the Musical, Jr.” tells the tale of Matilda, a child with extraordinary wit, intelligence, and special powers. Despite being unloved by her parents, she impresses her kind teacher, Miss Honey. However, Matilda’s school life is challenged by the child-hating headmistress, Miss Trunchbull. The musical is described as a “gleefully witty ode to the anarchy of childhood and the power of imagination,” featuring high-energy dance numbers and catchy songs.
The full-length “Matilda the Musical,” with book by Denis Kelly and original songs by Tim Minchin, has won more than 100 international awards, including 24 for Best Musical. It is the 15th longest-running show in West End history and ran on Broadway from 2013 to 2017.
