With tax day fast approaching the City of Bucyrus is reminding its residents that in addition to state and federal returns they must also file a city return by April 15.

WHO MUST FILE

A return must be filed by every resident individual, 18 years of age or over, regardless of source of income. Retired or permanently disabled residents with no taxable income may be excused from submitting annual returns if a waiver has been filed with the tax office. Non resident employees are not required to file a Bucyrus Income Tax Return provided they are fully withheld by their employer. Non-residents that own rentals located in Bucyrus or own a sole proprietorship that does business in Bucyrus are also required to file annual returns.

PART-YEAR RESIDENTS

If you were a resident of Bucyrus for any part of the year, you are required to file a return. Part-year residents are only taxed on wages received while living in Bucyrus. If you worked in a city with a tax rate of 1.25% or higher, you may prorate your wages. Please note that if wages are prorated, credit for tax withheld must also be prorated. If you worked in a city with a tax rate below 1.5% or did not have any local tax withheld, you may pro-rate income or provide either a payroll stub or a statement from your employer showing year to date gross wages paid and tax withheld as of the move date. A W-2 must also be provided.

PAYMENTS

Payment in full is due on or by April 15, 2014 to avoid penalty and interest. You may pay by cash (in person only), credit, check or money order. Checks or money orders should be made payable to Bucyrus City Income Tax Department. There is a $15.00 charge on all returned checks.

For taxpayers’ convenience, drop boxes will be available in the lobby of City Hall on April 15th during regular business hours for completed returns with all documentation included. Envelopes will also be available to insert all paperwork to maintain security and confidentiality. After regular hours, returns may be inserted in the mail slot located in the Income Tax Department door on the second floor. For those taxpayers needing assistance in filling out their returns, there will be additional staff in council chambers on April 15th.
