MARION—The Marion Fire Department reported to the scene of a train and automobile collision around 8 pm on Saturday evening in the 100 block of North Greenwood Street.

The car, occupied by only one passenger, was heavily damaged. The train came to a stop on Dix Avenue, a half-mile from the crash site.

EMTs had to extract the driver, who was transported to Marion General Hospital. Crawford County Now contacted the Marion Police Department. They were unable to give the name of the victim or an update on their condition.

According to statistics, Ohio ranks ninth in the country for railroad fatalities, with six out of nine deaths caused by driving around lowered gates in an attempt to beat a train.

In Ohio, crossing a railroad track while gates are down or lights are flashing is a fourth-degree misdemeanor punishable with up to 30 days in jail and a $250.00 fine.
