Lori Charlton, Auxiliary President of the Bucyrus VFW Post 1078 recently announced the plans for the second annual “Remembering Our Heroes” celebration. The recognition ceremony is set to begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 19, the final day of the 50th annual Bucyrus Bratwurst Festival.
Last year the event honored 150 veterans and raised $10,000 toward the post’s commitment to help local families of veterans.
“They may need help with gas, food, Christmas or any number of items. Our committee meets, reviews requests for assistance and grants those request as needed. All of the money raised goes right back to our local veterans and their families,” Charlton explained.
For this year’s event, there will be three speakers. The featured speaker will be Wynford High School alumni and basketball leader, Bill Harvey. Harvey will be retiring this year after 30 years of military service. Laura Heinley, a Bucyrus native and member of the Air Force National Guard will speak. Tommy Starner, Post Commander of VFW 1078 who retired from the Air Force after 22 years will speak as well.
The event is open to the veterans, their families and the public. All veterans eat free and the Food House will be open for family members and the public to purchase their lunch. There will be plenty of tent seating to provide comfort and shade.
VFW 1078 still is seeking sponsors for this event. Sponsorship can be tailored to fit any budget and the post will take donations up to the event.
