After months of planning and one day of walking, the students and staff of Bucyrus Elementary School met and exceeded their fundraising goal for the 2014 Redmen for the Cure Walk. The event was held May 14 at the Elementary School.
Approximately 688 students from preschool to fifth grade worked to exceed the $4,000 fundraising goal this year.
“The total raised this year for Komen Columbus was $4,327.28,” event coordinator Derek French said. “Our event has now raised over $9,600 to help battle breast cancer.”
Each year, the event has a new t-shirt design to commemorate the school’s efforts to help Komen Columbus. T-shirts sales this year exceeded 450 total, with students returning order forms for themselves and their families.
“Mr. Souder (Assistant Principal) challenged our students that for every dollar they raised he would run one meter,” French said. “Mr. Souder will be running a total of 2.69 miles to fulfill his challenge commitment to the students.”
For future events, the school is exploring new ways to engage parent and community participation.
“We are exploring different ideas like parents coming in to walk with their child during the school day, or having a family walk in the evening at the school,” French said. “This is something that Mrs. Green and I both would like to see happen, and we will discuss ways to include families in next year’s event.”
