Black Bart and his band of desperados weren’t hiding out in the woods from Ralphie and his Red Ryder BB gun at Lowe-Volk Park, although it was certainly understandable how one could have come to that conclusion on Sunday.

A posse of youngsters armed with BB guns took to the trails in the park during the afternoon for the Park District’s first BB shoot. Naturalist Josh Dyer says it was a success.

“It went over really well. We had good participation and a good response from the community,” Dyer said. “(We) took them on a little trail hike through the woods where they set up their own targets. We had pop cans and some light bulbs set up for them on a little firing range for them to shoot at. All in all, it was a really good event.”

The top marksmen for the day won gift cards to the Nature Center gift shop. They were Lincoln DeGray, Brandon Wade and Matt Schiefer. Black Bart – beware.
