MARION—Marion City Firefighters took less than two minutes to arrive on the scene of a house explosion in Marion.

When firefighters arrived at the home located at 800 Congress Street on Wednesday, it was totally collapsed, and the fire was threatening a nearby home. Firefighters also found a severely burned male occupant lying on the ground. Medics performed advanced life support care to the victim, and he was transported to Marion General Hospital, where he remains in serious condition.

There were no other occupants in the home. Columbia Gas was on hand to investigate the potential cause of the fire. Some residents reported smelling gas fumes in the area.

The fire department was able to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading. The incident remains under investigation.
