U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-Ohio) announced that his amendment to the Child Care Development Block Grant Reauthorization that would protect children from violent criminals has passed the Senate and is now headed to the president for signature.

The amendment would ensure the health and safety of children by clarifying that individuals convicted of violent crimes against children, like assault and domestic violence, are identified in criminal background checks and are not permitted to work in child care facilities receiving support through the Child Care Development Block Grant Program.

“We need to be taking every measure possible to ensure that our children are in safe learning environments and care facilities,” Portman stated. “This commonsense measure will help keep our children out of harm’s way by keeping violent criminals out of child care facilities. I’m pleased this important legislation will now become law.”
