The Bucyrus City Board of Control approved a bid Friday afternoon for the upcoming Plymouth Street and East Street Waterline Project.

R. A. Bores Excavating of Monroeville received the nod after submitting a low bid of $205,169.88. The family-owned business beat out 10 other competitors. Bids were opened on Oct. 28.

“I was surprised that we had that many (bids),” remarked Lyn Makeever of Makeever and Associates. “I haven’t had that many for quite a while. It’s good timing that also brought about good prices.”

Makeever said they caught the various companies at a good time as they prepare for winter work or plan for work that can be completed immediately or first thing in the spring.

R. A. Bores Excavating completed jobs for the City of Bucyrus in the past, including work on North Sandusky Avenue last year and Walnut Street in 2013.

Makeever did discuss with Bores Excavating the project as it relates to Bucyrus Elementary. Makeever reported that if the company started work on East Street while school was in session, the crews would be pulled off the road while school lets out. Other plans are also percolating to make the Waterline project as non-intrusive as possible for the school.

“They are excellent,” Mayor Jeff Reser commented on R. A. Bores Excavating. “They have their heads down and they work. They know what they’re doing and they don’t mess around.”

Ohio Public Works Commission still has to approve it but the wheels are in motion, Makeever said. A bid contract signing and a pre-construction meeting will be scheduled with Bores Excavating soon. The project could start as soon as Dec. 1.

The City has $150,000 while another $155,000 is coming from the state for the project that was originally budgeted for $300,000. The City will pay a percentage of the contract price while the state will chip in the rest.
