For the first time since the Crawford County Fair began showing alpacas and llamas there was a run-off round to determine the grand champion.
After the class obstacle course was completed Keton Pfeifer’s 6-year-old alpaca and Courtney Britt’s 4-year-old alpaca were neck and neck with points from the judge which resulted in a new obstacle course for the alpaca’s to go through. In the new course the handler of the alpaca had to lead them over a blue tarp, into a kiddie pool and pause then step over four wooden pools to finish the competition.
After the sawdust settled it was Pfeifer finishing one point ahead of Britt to claim grand champion. Britt received reserve champion honors.
Keton Pfeifer explained the training that went into a grand champion alpaca.
“We have a bunch of obstacles at home that we go through, and we walk them regularly and just make sure that they are ready for what they provide us with today.”
The alpaca and llama show featured 29 contestants in showmanship and 18 contestants in the obstacle course, both records in the six years that they have been on display at the fair.
