BUCYRUS—It has been confirmed by the Crawford County Board of Elections that both the local Republican and Democratic parties can nominate a candidate to run in the general election for Bucyrus City Council president.

The current council president, Kurt Fankhauser, announced on Tuesday that he has withdrawn his candidacy for re-election to the position. Brian Seybert has already been approved by the board of elections to run on the ballot in November as an independent but will possibly have competition if either party nominates a candidate.

According to Ruth Leuthold, director of the Crawford County Board of Elections, the parties have until 4 p.m. on Aug. 9 to file their nominee with the board of elections office.

In other election news, Robert Taylor has withdrawn his request for a hearing to object to the denial by the board of his independent petition to run for a Bucyrus City Council-at-Large position. According to Leuthold, his petition was denied due to the fact that he filed a nominating ballot as an Independent then voted in the May primary election as a Republican.

Robert Kalb, who also filed an independent petition to run for a council-at-large position in the upcoming election, will be meeting with the board after his petition was denied due to not filling out the number of signatures that he witnessed on the circulator’s statement of the petition.
