Every year the Crawford Park District devotes a day to take a hard look at geologic and fossil history and this coming Saturday is that day in 2014. The annual Rock `n Fossil Day will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lowe-Volk Park Nature Center.

There will be rock and fossil displays, rock saw demonstrations, a special exhibit of fluorescent minerals and vendor items for sale. Members of the Richland Lithic and Lapidary Society will be on hand to assist with the identification of items brought in by the public.

Former Bucyrus school teacher Tom Kottyan, Board member of the Richland Lithic and Lapidary Society, will give the keynote address at noon on, “How Fossils Are Formed.”

Random attendees will have the opportunity to receive a special clam fossil that many erroneously call a “beef heart”. The fossils have been donated by Stoneco which is a Division of the Shelly Corporation. The Shelly Corporation is dedicated to community service with an emphasis on earth science education.
