The Crawford Park District’s Lowe-Volk Park may have been celebrating the Earth Day Fair on Saturday, but it was really all about a grandma-granddaughter day for a Crestline woman.
Jackie Davidson explained she gets her out-of-town grandchildren one at a time for the weekend. “As soon as we pick them up, ‘Are we going to Lowe-Volk Park?’”
Davidson and 4-year-old Faith Motter, who came in from North Baltimore, were at Lowe-Volk Saturday during the Earth Day Fair and were busy with crafts at the tables manned by Liz Miller of Crawford Soil and Water Conservation district.
“We’re doing a recycled craft with bottle caps,” Miller explained.
While Faith was intently concentrating on her creation, Grandma Jackie was beaming. “All these things make me look like the best grandma in the world.”
There was plenty to do at Saturday’s Earth Day Fair both inside and out at the Lowe-Volk Park Nature Center. Besides the regular displays and activities, there was a recycling trailer, tree giveaways, plants for sale and a whole lot more.
Nicole Gear, along with 3-year-old Kaileb Peterman and John Cress, were busy putting recycled bags together.
“The Earth Day Fair is to help people be aware of how to reduce and reuse,” explained Park
District Naturalist Josh Dyer. “It’s not just a good thing to do, it’s good for the environment.”
Christina Kuchle of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources was explaining what she had in an aquarium. There were crayfish, a couple of species of darters, a leech and more.
“We got these out of the Sandusky River down here just this morning,” Kuchle said.
The gorgeous spring day with blue skies and warm temperatures were perfect for the Earth Day Fair and what it was all about, even if some of it was a little squishy.
“It’s a celebration of the earth we need to take care of,” Dyer said, nodding back over his shoulder at a picnic table filled with sculptures made from the soil. “We’re offering the kids a chance to play in the mud.”
It doesn’t get any earthier than that, or more fun.
