OhioHealth MedCentral Mansfield Hospital will sponsor a free skin cancer screening for individuals who currently do not see a local dermatologist on Friday, May 9, from 8 to 11:30 a.m. and Saturday, May 10, from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
The participating dermatologists request people whom they have not seen before as patients in their practices. The free screening is for patients who do not have a dermatologist within Mansfield or the surrounding communities. Also, the participating physicians do not want those to be screened to ask for a second opinion.
The exam is free, but you must register for an appointment by calling (419) 526-8791. Wear easy-to-remove clothes for the skin cancer check which should take about 10 minutes. The exams will be conducted at OhioHealth MedCentral’s Radiation Therapy Building, 330 Glessner Avenue.
May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. It is estimated that more than two million new cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed in the United States this year. Malignant melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, will kill over 8,000 people this year.
Most skin cancers, including melanoma can be cured if detected early. Knowing the risk factors and signs and symptoms is essential. But, less than one-third of Americans currently examine their skin for signs of melanoma and more than half do not know the signs of melanoma.
