MARION, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—The Ohio State University at Marion’s popular Buckeye Talks on Tap lecture series will welcome former Dean and Associate Professor of Geography Emeritus Dr. Greg Rose for a free public discussion on the history of Midwest migration.

Dr. Rose will present his lecture, “Settlement of the Old Northwest, 1850,” on Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 5:30 p.m. at Bucci’s Italian Scratch Kitchen, located inside Passenger & Rail Co., 320 W. Center St. in Marion.

The Old Northwest, which is the region now comprising Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin, began opening for settlement to non-Indigenous peoples at the close of the 1700s. Rose’s research focuses on the historical geography of the Midwest, specifically the origins of the immigrant populations who settled the area in the 19th century.

Using the 1850 U.S. Census as his primary source—the first census to record the birthplaces of inhabitants—Dr. Rose will explore where these new residents came from, how they traveled to the region, and their distribution across the five states. His current work also includes a paper on the demography of the four Ohio Shaker villages in 1850.

Admission to Buckeye Talks on Tap is free and open to both the community and the campus. The lecture series is designed to foster engaging conversation between academic experts and the community in a casual setting, patterned after the international Science Cafe phenomenon.

Doors open at the restaurant at 5 p.m., with the lecture beginning at 5:30 p.m. A short question-and-answer session will follow the presentation. Attendees are invited to purchase dinner and drinks on their own and will be entered to win a door prize provided by Marcie DeWitt from Anchor and Away Travel.
