COLUMBUS, OH (MARION COUNTY NOW)—As Ohioans embrace warmer weather and outdoor activities, the Ohio Department of Commerce Division of Liquor Control is reminding adults about the state’s regulations regarding where alcoholic beverages can be consumed. The guidance is particularly relevant with the arrival of patio season and numerous community events held within Designated Outdoor Refreshment Areas (DORAs).
“Warmer temperatures and outdoor gatherings are perfect for enjoying everything Ohio has to offer,” said Division Superintendent Jackie DeGenova in a statement. “We urge everyone to follow state laws and make responsible choices when it comes to alcohol consumption. By doing so, we can ensure a safe and enjoyable summer for all.”
The Division highlighted several key reminders for consumers regarding alcohol laws and social responsibility:
Permit Premises: State law prohibits taking alcohol-based drinks away from the premises of a liquor permit holder, including special events with temporary permits. While some establishments may temporarily expand their permitted areas with approval, consumers should look for posted signs and follow staff guidance to know where alcohol can be legally consumed.
Designated Outdoor Refreshment Areas (DORAs): Ohio has over 160 DORAs that allow exceptions to open container laws within defined boundaries. Within these areas, consumers can buy drinks from a permitted establishment and consume them in approved containers within the DORA limits. Importantly, outside alcohol cannot be brought into a DORA, and non-liquor permit holding businesses within a DORA can choose whether or not to allow DORA beverages inside. Local DORA rules, hours, and boundaries vary. A map of all Ohio DORAs is available at com.ohio.gov/DORAs.
Social Responsibility: Alcohol consumption is limited to those 21 and older, who should never provide alcohol to underage individuals. The Division also encourages those of legal drinking age to stay hydrated, eat, and plan transportation in advance. Permit holders and their staff are reminded to always check IDs and not serve visibly intoxicated patrons.
Reporting Violations: Suspected violations of Ohio liquor laws should be reported to local law enforcement or the Ohio Investigative Unit.
The Division of Liquor Control emphasizes personal accountability and works to promote compliance with state regulations, aiming to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience at Ohio’s outdoor venues.
