COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Republicans and Democrats in the Ohio Legislature are working to coalesce around a new redistricting system before year’s end.
The state alters legislative and U.S. House district boundaries every 10 years to reflect population shifts identified by the U.S. Census. Both parties see flaws in Ohio’s current setup, in which state lawmakers draw congressional districts and a state Apportionment Board draws state legislative districts.
But the parties have struggled for years to come up with a solution.
Republican Ohio Senate President Keith Faber says he hopes to vote on a plan to present to voters. The latest proposal would create a new panel to draw legislative districts and require a minority-party vote for approval.
A new Ohio House plan that adds a tie-breaking mechanism is moving simultaneously.
