COLUMBUS, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—As crews continue to battle devastating wildfires in the Los Angeles area, the Ohio Department of Commerce Division of Financial Institutions (DFI) is urging Ohioans to exercise caution when donating to relief efforts. Recent warnings from the California Attorney General and local Los Angeles officials highlight the risks of fraud and scams during disasters, with fraudsters often posing as charities or creating fake donation campaigns.

“It’s unfortunate that during times of tragedy like we’re seeing in California, there are those who seek to exploit the generosity of others,” said DFI Superintendent Kevin Allard. “Not only are these scammers defrauding individuals of money, they’re also taking from reputable charities who will use that money to help those who have been impacted.”

To avoid scams, the DFI advises donors to contribute only to reputable organizations such as the American Red Cross, Salvation Army, or United Way. Donors should be cautious of unsolicited requests and avoid providing sensitive financial information unless certain of the communication’s authenticity. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) also recommends conducting research, approaching crowdfunding sites carefully, using secure payment methods, and verifying text donations through official websites.

Ohioans are encouraged to work directly with trusted national organizations to ensure their contributions aid those in need. For more information, visit the DFI website or contact the FTC for additional tips on safe donating practices.
