BUCYRUS ― The official count of the May Republican primary election was completed on Monday and the winner of the race for Bucyrus City Council President is Kurt Fankhauser.

The unofficial count on May 7 stood at 701 votes for Fankhauser and 694 for his opponent, Terry Spiegel. The official count has Fankhauser as the winner of the race with 705 votes while the votes for Spiegel remained at 694.

According to Crawford County Board of Elections Director Ruth Leuthold, there were a total of 10 ballots added in the official count.

“We had three post-absentee ballots that were postmarked on time and a total of nine provisional ballots cast throughout the county but two of those were not eligible to be counted,” Leuthold said.

Leuthold said that Fankhauser received 50.39 percent of the votes from Bucyrus residents while Spiegel received 49.61 percent.

“Kurt Fankhauser is the winner of the council president race and the percentage is not in the range for an automatic recount,” Leuthold said. “Both Terry Spiegel and Kurt Fankhauser were at the official count meeting and Terry indicated he will not be asking for a recount.”

Since no Democratic or Independent candidates filed to run for the council president position in November, Fankhauser is set to run unopposed in the general election. Current council president Sis Love did not run for re-election.

Leuthold said other vote counts changed but not enough to change the outcome of any of the candidate races.
